Sumartin on Brac Island history
Sumartin is a picturesque village located on the eastern cape of the island of Brač (Brač). The village was founded in 1645 by outsiders from Dalmatia fleeing the Turks and was originally called
Vrhbrac
. They had to adapt to their surroundings and so they took up fishing, sailing and shipbuilding (a small shipyard is still active today). Friar Andrija Kacic – Miosic, a famous poet of Dalmatia where the medieval chapel of sv. Martin (St. Martin, after whom Sumartin was named) laid the foundations of the Franciscan monastery.
